Efforts to improve public services in Guargacho, particularly in terms of cleanliness, road safety, public health, and mobility, have been initiated through a collaborative partnership between the municipalities of Arona and San Miguel de Abona. Clari Pérez, the first deputy mayor of Arona, and Julián Jesús Martín, the third deputy mayor of San Miguel, both responsible for Public Services in their respective areas, conducted a joint visit to assess the needs for cleaning and public service initiatives in Guargacho.

Challenges with Cleaning and Lighting

One major issue addressed by the councils was the replacement of containers that were causing inconvenience to both residents and cleaning services. Following discussions, it was agreed to introduce new container points to better serve the neighbourhood’s needs.
Another point of focus was the enhancement of lighting in a significant parking area in the town. Clari Pérez mentioned that “residents had raised concerns about inadequate lighting in the parking lot.” “We have initiated the process to enhance it: we are planning to switch the flooring to gravel and address the lighting issue,” she explained.
Regarding cleanliness, the councillor from Arona highlighted that “both municipalities are diligently working towards resolving this matter.” “While it poses challenges, we are in constant communication to offer solutions to our residents,” she affirmed. The primary obstacle faced by the town is related to the “uncivil conduct” of a resident suffering from Diogenes syndrome, which leads to increased rat infestations and the accumulation of waste in the area, she noted.
Both councillors acknowledged that it was a productive morning of collaboration. Pérez mentioned, “Once a week, we hit the streets to engage directly with the community in Arona, and today we are pleased to initiate discussions with the residents of Guargacho to address the town’s problems.” She added, “Addressing citizens’ concerns requires us to be present among them. It is ineffective to resolve everything at City Hall without engaging with the people and listening to their needs,” she emphasized.
Julián Martín stressed “the significance of coordinated efforts and joint initiatives by both local administrations.” He stated, “In an area where many services are shared by residents of San Miguel and Arona, direct cooperation is vital.” Martín highlighted the importance of collaborative management, stating that “working together presents challenges, but we are dedicated to providing the best conditions for the residents of Guargacho. Days like today are crucial for addressing the primary issues faced by our community,” he emphasized.
The residents of Guargacho expressed their gratitude to both administrations for their efforts in resolving the town’s challenges.
