Wind Alert Issued by the Government of the Canary Islands Across the Archipelago

The Canary Islands Government, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, has declared a wind alert for all the islands starting from 8th April at 8:00 pm, urging the population to follow the self-protection advice provided by the General Directorate.

This decision is made taking into account the information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and other available sources, and in accordance with the Specific Emergency Plan for Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

North and northeast winds are expected with an average speed ranging from 20 to 50 kilometers per hour, with areas of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour on the highest islands and from 30 to 60 kilometers per hour in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Max wind gusts are expected to reach and exceed 60 to 90 kilometers per hour.

The strongest gusts are expected in El Hierro, in high areas, on the summit and on the west and south slopes of the island; in La Palma, in the municipalities of Garafía, El Paso, Mazo and Fuencaliente; in La Gomera, on the summit, in the municipalities of San Sebastián and Valle Gran Rey, in mid-altitude areas and high areas of Alajeró and Vallehermoso, and in the high areas of Agulo and Hermigua; in Tenerife, in Macizo de Teno, south face of the Cañadas del Teide, Dorsal Range and Anaga Massif, metropolitan area and on the coast and part of the mid-altitudes of the municipalities of Fasnia, Arico and Granadilla de Abona.
