The Canary Islands Administration issues wind warning across the archipelago

The Canary Islands Administration, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, has declared a wind alert situation for all the islands from 8th April, starting at 20:00 hours. The population is urged to follow the self-protection advice provided by the General Directorate.

This decision is made taking into account information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and other available sources, and in accordance with the Specific Emergency Plan for Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

North and northeast winds are expected with an average variable speed of 20 to 50 kilometers per hour, with areas of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour on the higher altitude islands, and 30 to 60 kilometers per hour in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Possible peak gusts are expected to reach and exceed 60 to 90 kilometers per hour.

The strongest gusts will be recorded in El Hierro, in high areas, on the summit and on the west and south slopes of the island; in La Palma, in the municipalities of Garafía, El Paso, Mazo, and Fuencaliente; in La Gomera, on the summit, in the municipalities of San Sebastián and Valle Gran Rey, in mid-altitude and high areas of Alajeró and Vallehermoso, and in the higher areas of Agulo and Hermigua; in Tenerife, in Macizo de Teno, south face of the Cañadas del Teide, Dorsal Ridge, and Macizo de Anaga, metropolitan area and coast and part of the mid-altitude of the municipalities of Fasnia, Arico, and Granadilla de Abona.

In Gran Canaria, it will affect Artenara, Tejeda, Vega de San Mateo, Valsequillo, Telde, Ingenio, Agüimes and Santa Lucía de Tirajana, on the coast of La Aldea, as well as in the high areas of the municipalities of Agaete and San Bartolomé de Tirajana; in Fuerteventura, in the municipalities of Pájara, Tuineje, Betancuria, and Antigua, and in Lanzarote, in the interior and on the east and south slopes of the island, as well as in La Graciosa.
