Yesterday, the jury of the contest defined the seven finalists of the XIII International Young Designers Competition. The Tenerife Moda brand of the Island Council is once again promoting an event that is reemerging strongly after a few forgotten years. Its main objective is to make the Island the epicenter of the sector, initially at a Canary Islands level. The president of the Insular Corporation, Rosa Dávila, is more ambitious and proposes the idea of becoming “a national reference” and even, with an “international” character.

The competition that rewards the creativity of the island designers is specifically framed within the Tenerife International Fashion Fair, which will take place on June 6th at the Recinto Ferial de Santa Cruz. The deliberation took place yesterday in the Insular Plenary Hall and was attended by Rosa Dávila, as well as by the councillors of Employment and Education, Efraín Medina, and Youth, Serafín Mesa.

The finalists who will be able to showcase their proposals on the runway are David Pérez Martínez (Guadalajara), Eva Gómez Martínez (Vitoria), Leonardo Mena (Mexico), Alejandro Niño (Colombia), Diego Barroso (La Gomera), Michelle Abad Hernández (Tenerife), and Nazaret Quesada Pineda (Tenerife).

When making the selection, the jury paid special attention to the originality, quality, and creativity of the designs, as well as their innovation and adaptability to the market and commercial viability.

Showcasing Talent

Rosa Dávila highlighted the importance of the competition as “a great opportunity to showcase the talent of our young designers”. Moreover, she values that “it offers the possibility of entrepreneurship for all those who want to start in the textile and fashion sector”. She concluded with the initial idea: “The Island is once again the national and international epicenter”.

Quality Proposals

Efraín Medina highlighted the quality of the submitted proposals. He mentioned that more than 65 applications have been received from Spain, Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Italy, and Brazil. “The Council,” the councillor pointed out, “is on track to continue working to enhance this sector.” Hence, “the launch of the Strategic Plan Tenerife Moda 2024-2027 based on three pillars: excellence in design and production, development of local talent, and sustainability and international projection”.

Professionals

The wide range of jury members shows their diversity and expertise to deliver the verdict. It included professionals from the sector such as digital creator Gara de Paz; designer Betsabé Borcha; designers Carlos Curbelo and Santi Castro; Isla Bonita Moda director Andrés Acosta; artistic director Daniel Pagés; specialized photographers Alfonso Bravo and Edgar Magdalena; fashion and social artist Alex Mercurio, fashion product manager Grazziana Arce, and stylist Ángel Guedes.
