The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, through the Autonomous Organization of Culture (OAC), has taken down the sculpture known as “Red Sun” by Francisco Sobrino for restoration. This artwork is part of the International Street Sculpture Exhibition and used to be situated on La Constitución Avenue in Cabo Llanos. It will now find a new home inside La Granja park.

Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, emphasises the City Council’s responsibility in preserving the historical heritage, particularly valuable artworks scattered across the city, shaping its landscape and history. These sculptures are part of the International Exhibition of Street Sculptures, which recently marked its 50th anniversary.

Councilor for Culture and Historical Heritage, Santiago Díaz Mejías, highlights the necessity of restoring these sculptures, worn down over time and subjected to acts of vandalism. He calls for a collective effort from the public to safeguard our cultural heritage, reminding everyone that the cost of restoration is borne by taxpayers.

The mayor also announces that the sculpture will be dismantled and refurbished by the awarded company Julio Crespo Canarias, SA. Moreover, “Red Sun” is not the only sculpture undergoing restoration, with more revelations expected in the following weeks.
