An incursion of seaweed forces the closure of the Punta swimming pool

An invasion of algae caused by the recent storm from the storm Nelson has kept the natural pool of Punta del Hidalgo, on the coast of La Laguna, closed. The municipal cleaning company workers are scheduled to remove the accumulation of seaweed covering the entire pool this afternoon. Once these works are completed, the City Council announces that this bathing area will reopen.

It has not been the only consequence of the high waves and strong gusts of wind that lashed the Tenerife coast last week. The La Laguna City Council is carrying out repairs to the damage caused by the sea not only at La Punta, but also at the natural pools of Bajamar and Jóver. The big waves caused various damages to the paving, accesses, and the pool itself due to the falling debris, in addition to causing an abundant entry of algae that advise against bathing.

At the moment, the Jóver pool and one of the Bajamar pools (the one closest to the lighthouse), as well as the children’s pool, are open for bathing. On the other hand, the second pool of this coastal enclave, like the one in La Punta, remains closed, with its cleaning scheduled for early Thursday morning if sea conditions allow it. The proliferation of moss both in the water and on the pavement, as well as the presence of fallen debris inside the pool, currently prevent the use of this pool.

In Bajamar, the lifeguards’ watchtower will also be relocated, as it was also displaced by the sea. The councillor for Beaches and Pools, Ángel Chinea, regrets any inconvenience these actions may cause to bathers and hopes to resolve them “as soon as possible.” “The works are to ensure the good condition and quality of our bathing areas,” he concluded.
