The breakwater at Las Teresitas beach in Santa Cruz is set to undergo renovation as the rehabilitation works on the structure are scheduled to commence next month. The project aims to completely rejuvenate the popular coastal promenade, transforming it into a recreational area for locals, visitors, and tourists to enjoy with enhanced safety measures.

The repair project for the northeast breakwater at Las Teresitas, with an estimated investment of 2,139 million euros, was approved by the Governing Board of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council last Monday. The construction work will be undertaken by the Satocan company and is expected to be completed within a maximum period of seven months.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez emphasised the significance of this initiative by stating, “This upcoming project allows us to further progress in the revitalisation efforts being carried out in San Andrés and its vicinity. Our focus is on rehabilitating key locations such as the recently refurbished Dique street, the addition of almost 300 new parking spaces near the beachfront, the construction of a second bridge connecting to Anaga, and now, the enhancement and refurbishment of the Las Teresitas breakwater.”

On the other hand, Infrastructure Councillor Javier Rivero outlined that “the urgent rehabilitation of the breakwater, which was tendered at the end of last year, is necessitated by the current condition of the structure. Significant dislodgement of breakwater blocks in the outer slope and central section has occurred due to storm surges since its original construction. The project will also address the deteriorated condition of the crown pavement, where some concrete slabs have been dislodged by wave action.”

Meanwhile, Strategic Projects Councillor Carlos Tarife highlighted that “this enhancement project will also receive funding from European sources through the Next Generation funds. As part of the EU resilience strategy, over 1,118 million euros will be allocated for the execution, accounting for more than half of the total project cost.”

Expressing satisfaction at the commencement of these works, Anaga Councillor Gladis de León lauded the progress made despite the bureaucratic challenges faced. She remarked, “The imminent revitalisation of the promenade is truly a positive development for the entire city.”
