SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 10 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Sports area of the Cabildo de Tenerife and the University of La Laguna (ULL) have carried out the study entitled ‘Analysis of the situation of gender equality’, among whose conclusions highlights the minority presence of women in all spheres of sport in the island, a gap that increases in the higher categories.

This study has been presented by the insular councilor for Sports, Concepción Rivero, together with the insular director, Ángel Pérez, and the technician of the Social Innovation Laboratory of the General Foundation of the Leticia Díaz Polegre University.

Concepción Rivero highlighted “the scarce presence of women in governing bodies, positions of coaches, refereeing teams, their minimal participation in international competitions, and that only 26% of the federative files are for women.” She added that the study will serve as the basis for developing actions aimed at promoting a greater presence of women in all spheres of sport.

“Despite the fact that every day more women practice sports, analyzing the federative licenses, the gap that exists and that requires specific policies is evident; from the Educar Training program we will continue to work on equality. For this, we must help the federations to carry out the consequent equality plans, protocols against harassment and the implementation of regimes and regulations with positive reinforcement measures, “added the counselor.

Ángel Pérez pointed out that the administrations “have to guarantee an egalitarian federated sport, promote actions that not only allow more girls and young people to join the sport, but also promote the incorporation of women to sports education and refereeing teams and favor the necessary conciliation that allows a balanced presence of women and men in the national and international competitions of the superior categories “.

Leticia Díaz explained that, taking into account the results, it is evident “that equality has not been achieved in sports practice and with the study we have tried to focus on where these inequalities are found. For this, a survey of 32 questions that were answered by 40 sports federations “.

STUDY DATA

The study reveals the low presence of women in the governing bodies of sports federations (30.5%) and very low in their positions of responsibility (10%). There are also few women in coaching positions; Of the total of 3,383 people analyzed, 20% are women, that is, 639, a percentage that decreases as the age category increases to 15% in youth or seniors.

There is little presence of women in the refereeing teams (only 30%), with very little presence in certain age categories. In Tenerife, 594 female referees were counted.

Of the total of 60,962 federative records that exist on the island, only 16,088 (26%) correspond to women and girls, this gender gap worsening as of adolescence. While 37% are girls in prebenjamin, in juvenile, senior or absolute only one in four records corresponds to a woman, 25%.

The presence of men and women in national and international competitions is quite balanced in all lower categories, producing a gap in the presence of women in higher categories, especially in international ones, with only 25% women.
