NC-BC Lambasts Government’s Inaction over Military Exercises in Morocco

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 1st April (EUROPA PRESS) –

The head of Nueva Canarias-Canarista Bloc (NC-BC), Román Rodríguez, has condemned the government’s “failure to act” in response to Morocco’s military exercises on the coast of Western Sahara near the Archipelago. He highlighted the breach of international agreements, criticising the weak and passive stance of the Canarian Executive with Madrid in the face of “a new violation of the Statute and a continuous series of isolated and unilateral incidents by the Alawite kingdom that are highly concerning.”

Román Rodríguez has expressed NC-BC’s apprehension about the government’s lack of response to the naval activities of the Alawite kingdom near the Canary Islands, which commenced last Friday and are expected to last around three months. This worry is further deepened by the potential detrimental effects on the marine ecosystem, according to the organization’s spokesperson, Luis Campos.

The president of NC-BC denounced Morocco’s recent encroachment on the sovereignty of the Sahrawi people and the violation of international treaties. This coincided with the European Union’s Court of Justice recommendation to invalidate the fishing agreement between Rabat and the Union, as it involved the waters of Western Sahara.

Rodríguez called for “transparency and clarity” from Madrid, while Campos expressed hope that Pedro Sánchez’s government does not mistake good neighbourly relations for “submission” to the African nation.

Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista demanded a firmer stance and less complacency from the CC and PP Executive when the national administration once again conceals information on a matter of importance to the islands. This act also challenges one of the fundamental principles of the Statute concerning the promotion of the Canary Islands as a bastion of peace and solidarity.

Luis Campos highlighted the series of unilateral and ongoing events by Morocco that have raised concerns among the Canarian populace. These events range from the recent resurgence in oil exploration to the declaration of territorial waters and statements by prominent figures advocating for the annexation of Ceuta, Melilla, and the Canary Islands.
