The Tenerife Island Council, through the Tenerife Island Water Council, will invest 4.1 million euros in the extension works of the Adeje-Arona underwater outfall, a valuable pipeline that discharges saltwater from the Adeje-Arona regional desalination plant (EDAM) into the sea. The works commence this Monday, day 1, and involve the controlled discharge of saltwater from the EDAM Adeje-Arona to the final part of Troya Ravine to reach the sea.

The objective of the works is to improve the discharge of saltwater into the sea at a greater distance from the coast, extending the outfall by 200 meters and relocating the outfall point to over 40 meters depth. The works include implementing safety measures in the area, as well as restricting access in the surroundings of the Troya Ravine estuary. The expected duration of the works is one and a half months, although it will depend on sea conditions and waves.

The Minister of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, states that “the actions to be carried out are complex and important because we are talking about underwater work at over 40 meters depth. It must be understood that the closure of the underwater outfall to extend its length is necessary because it will result in an improvement in the discharge of saltwater from the regional desalination plant after the purification and regeneration of water for agricultural use. This is the only way to carry out very complex works that will result in an environmental improvement in the entire area.”

The manager of the Tenerife Island Water Council, Javier Davara, explains that as a consequence of the closure of the outfall for the project’s development, “the water and saltwater from the EDAM will be discharged at the final stretch of Troya Ravine, so a white plume will be visible on the sea, which is nothing but the mixture of saline solutions.”

Davara agrees on “the importance and complexity of the works to be carried out in order to extend the outfall to 1,100 meters from the coast.” In this sense, the works involve the connection of the two pipes, the existing one and the new one, for which the construction of a new piece to connect the outfall and allow the discharge of saltwater over a kilometer from the coast is necessary.
