SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 28th March (EUROPA PRESS) –
Expectations for the Canary Islands this Thursday and Good Friday indicate potential impacts from Storm Nelson, bringing strong gusts of wind, rough sea conditions, and especially heavy rain, with La Palma being the most affected island, according to details from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
Presently, the fronts associated with Storm Nelson have prompted the activation of a yellow warning (risk) due to intense showers in La Palma, particularly concentrated in the northern region by day’s end, as well as very strong westerly winds in La Palma (80 km/h), and El Hierro (70 km/h), affecting exposed peaks and eastern-facing midlands. There will also be occasional episodes of very strong westward winds on the peaks of Tenerife later in the day.
Additionally, the islands of La Palma and El Hierro are under a yellow alert due to a combined northwesterly swell producing 4 to 5-meter waves, with Tenerife also facing a warning due to west or southwest winds blowing at 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) off the north coast.
Tomorrow, Friday, a yellow warning is forecast for heavy showers in La Palma, as well as the northeast regions of El Hierro and Tenerife during the early morning hours, alongside very strong northwesterly gusts expected at the summits of La Palma and in El Hierro’s northeastern midlands. There are also forecasts for locally very strong northwesterly winds in elevated areas of Tenerife.
Furthermore, the yellow alert for adverse coastal conditions will expand to the northern areas of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, with La Palma and El Hierro facing an upgrade to an orange warning level.
