Granadilla City Council in Tenerife calls for designation of ‘tensioned zone’

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27th March (EUROPA PRESS) –

A request was made during the Wednesday plenary session by the Granadilla de Abona City Council to urge the Canary Islands Government to designate the municipality as a stressed residential market area.

The proposal, brought forward by Mayor Jennifer Miranda, was unanimously approved by all political factions.

The main objective of this designation is to further implement a variety of measures that can help address the significant housing issue faced by Granadilla de Abona, focusing on the social purpose of housing by introducing affordable rentals to ease the financial burden experienced by many residents when it comes to rent payments, as highlighted by the council in a statement.

The mayor elaborated that with this request “we are continuing to make strides in tackling one of the most pressing issues affecting the population of Granadilla de Abona, which is the cost of housing.”

Following the submission of the request, it will be the responsibility of the Canary Islands Government to conduct an analysis to determine whether rental or mortgage expenditures exceed 30% of the average income of Granada families.

If this situation is confirmed, residential areas meeting these criteria may be designated as stress zones.

This initiative complements other actions undertaken by the local administration, composed of the PSOE and the PP, such as the release of nearly 300 properties in the Los Hinojeros district in Granadilla, and the allocation of over 3,000 square metres to the Canary Housing Institute for the development of social housing.
