The recent passing of the DANA over the Canary Islands has resulted in some notable damage that should give us pause for thought. In Candelaria, the local council has highlighted some striking issues that demand our attention.

“Wipes, sanitary products, food residues, used cooking oil, nappies, sanitary pads, and cotton buds are causing blockages and overflow in the sewage system during heavy rainfall,” acknowledged the Candelaria City Council. This, in turn, leads to additional costs for the municipal budget.

To prevent water circulation problems, an additional “clean-up and repair” operation is required which “we all have to take responsibility for,” as stressed by the council: “Being responsible is crucial. It not only preserves our environment but also ensures significant economic savings.”
