Workers at Correos in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna have called for a strike this Wednesday and on 1st April in all delivery offices in both municipalities to protest against the workload they have to endure due to the lack of new hires.
The strike has been called by Intersindical Canaria and will take place this Wednesday at the Automated Processing Centre in Taco and on Monday 1st April in all delivery offices in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna with the aim to disrupt the service, as reported by the union in a statement on Tuesday.
Intersindical Canaria points out that the work overload has been ongoing in recent years but the management of this public company “show no interest in resolving” the situation.
This situation generates stress, anxiety, accidents, a negative work environment, and pressure affecting the performance and health of the staff.
Above all, it warns, it generates discontent among the public and the workers who are unable to meet the basic public services that Correos is legally obligated to provide as a company that carries out universal postal services.

The union adds that after the recruitment tests intended to expand and strengthen the workforce, not only has the number of workers not increased but it has “suffered” due to unfilled positions, exacerbated by the lack of replacements for long-term absences that have arisen.
Intersindical Canaria assures that there are neighbourhoods that have gone over a month without mail delivery and highlights the continual overexertion of the staff, who provided essential services during the pandemic.
Therefore, the strike committee has submitted a list of basic demands to the management, such as the filling of all job positions, an end to pressure on the staff that are being asked to do the impossible, and ensuring that vehicles are properly maintained.
