Candelaria Local Authority Warns Residents to Take Responsibility After Post-Rain Discoveries

Candelaria was one of the municipalities most affected by the downpours due to the DANA that hit Tenerife last weekend. On Saturday morning, hail fell in the municipality and there was a large amount of rainfall per square meter due to the intense precipitation. The situation resulted in overflowing sewer drains, causing large puddles on the main roads of the municipality.

The cause of these overflowing sewers lies, at least in part, as reported by the city council, in the waste that residents and visitors of Candelaria have been dumping into the sewage system in recent months.

As a result, the council has posted a thread on Twitter denouncing the waste found when cleaning the drains after the storm. Wet wipes, tampons, food scraps, used oil, nappies, sanitary pads, and cotton buds are among the items the Council found in the pipes and sewers.

This situation has led the Candelaria local authority to remind its residents and visitors that they must be responsible, take care of the environment, and avoid forcing the institution to spend more money than budgeted: “We all bear the extra cost of cleaning and repairs. Please, be responsible. Doing so means taking care of our environment and significant economic savings,” they say on Twitter.
