Postal Workers in Santa Cruz and La Laguna to Go on Strike Over Work Overload

Employees of the Post Office in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna have organised a strike day for this Wednesday and April 1 at all delivery offices in both towns to protest against the excessive workload they are facing due to the lack of new hiring.

The strike has been called by the Canarian Inter-Trade Union and is set to occur this Wednesday at the Taco Automated Treatment Centre, and on Monday, April 1, at all delivery offices in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna, with the intention of disrupting the service, as reported by the union.

The Canarian Inter-Trade Union highlights that the excessive workload has persisted over the years, and the management of this public company “shows no interest in resolving” the issue.

This situation leads to stress, anxiety, accidents, a negative work environment, and pressure that impacts the performance and well-being of the employees, the union adds.

Above all, it creates inconvenience among citizens and employees by hindering the fulfilment of the essential public services that Correos is obligated to provide as a company responsible for the universal postal service.

The union organisation points out that despite entrance exams aimed at expanding and stabilising the workforce, not only has the number of employees not increased but there has been a “decline” due to unfilled positions, worsened by the lack of replacements for long-term absenteeism.

The Canarian Inter-Trade Union states that some neighbourhoods have not received mail for over a month and highlights the ongoing strain on staff who provided an essential service during the pandemic.

As a result, the strike committee has submitted a list of fundamental demands to the management, including ensuring all positions are filled, ceasing the unreasonable demands on the workforce, and maintaining vehicles in good condition.

Failure to meet these demands will result in further protests to guarantee the provision of a universal postal service to citizens under fair working conditions, compliant with the law, the union emphasises.
