The minister announces the start of construction of the new Tenerife South Airport terminal for 2026

Sánchez defended that with the latest enlargements carried out, which required some 140 million investment, the Reina Sofía “has plenty of capacity” to respond to the needs of the air traffic planned for the next few years. Speaking to Radio Club Tenerife, he argued that Tenerife Sur “is not an airport compromised in capacity.” He denied lack of “sensitivity” of the State with the Island and justified the management of the Executive and AENA arguing that planning a new infrastructure that is “complex” requires many studies that “we cannot skip”.

On October 19, the Secretary of State for Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Isabel Pardo de Vera, announced thate the central government guarantees that AENA will increase the budget to draft the new terminal project from Tenerife South Airport up to the amount that is necessary. He did so after a meeting on the island with social and economic representatives and the Minister of Transport of the Canary Islands Government, Sebastián Franquis.

Pedro Martin.

The president of the Cabildo also attended that meeting and stated yesterday that “I have a clear roadmap and the commitment of the Secretary of State. We have proposed a new model, the society of Tenerife supports us and it is the one that we are going to continue discussing with the Government. We are not going to accept that this is a matter that we will start talking about as of 2026 ».

Carlos Alonso.

For the CC spokesman in the Cabildo, the minister’s words disavow the Secretary of State and assumes that the Ministry of Transport and AENA “put Tenerife Sur out of their priorities.” Agreeing with the project “on the planning channeled three years ago, taking into account the specificities of quality and needs of the airport”, the island councilor demands that the investment materialize before 2026. “Delaying it for five years is like saying no it will carry out because it does not have, today, any formal element that compromises it.

ED Terminal project being built in competing destinations today.

Roberto Ucelay.

“What Tenerife society expects is that the Ministry and AENA share the draft of the bases to tender the new terminal. Thus we can speak of a real advance and a definitive will of the Government of Spain. If not, we will continue with what was approved by the Council of Ministers and DORA ”, reflects the president of the Círculo de Empresarios y Profesionales del Sur de Tenerife (CEST).

José Julián Mena.

The mayor of Arona looks towards the airports of Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante or Malaga, which with the DORA II “take a step to become more competitive”, and states that “Tenerife South also wants to remain competitive”, so “must take that leap that would place it in a position to become an important hub in the Atlantic for connections between Europe, America and Africa.

José Fernando Cabrera.

The businessman and president of the Foro Amigos del Sur del Tenerife (FAST) is one of the most critical of AENA and the central government by leaving the start of work on the new terminal out of DORA II. «For Tenerife, the terminal is very important, as have been for AENA the peninsular companies commissioned by international architects, such as Lamela, Calatrava, Bofill, Bover, Fairbank. The current extension to which the minister refers is an eyesore, in the line of the town sports centers built in the 80s and does not represent what Tenerife is “.

Oscar Izquierdo.

“You have to start the new terminal now and stop so many announcements, promises and unjustified delays.” The president of the construction association assures that he does not give “any value” to the words of the Minister of Transport “because experience shows us his null interest in Tenerife Sur.”
