Snow at Teide but no chance to go see it. The DANA affecting the Canary Islands keeps the rains and low temperatures in the National Park, and ice sheets on the road have led the Tenerife Island Council to close access to the Teide National Park again via La Esperanza (TF-24) and La Orotava (TF-21) due to the presence of ice sheets on the road early on this Sunday.

Specifically, as reported by the island council in a press release, the closure on TF-21 has been made from PK 16 (Aguamansa) to PK 45 (Parador de las Cañadas del Teide), while on TF 24 it goes from PK 24 (Los Loros junction) to the end. The island council advises the population to avoid unnecessary travel, especially to the summit areas of the island, as well as engaging in outdoor activities.

The Tenerife Island Council activated on Friday 22nd as a preventive measure the Tenerife Island Emergency Plan (PEIN) due to the declaration of alert for rain, winds, and snow in summit areas, storms, and coastal phenomena on the north coast of the island issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government, in application of the Specific Plan for Emergencies due to Adverse Weather Phenomena Risks (PEFMA).

Yesterday morning (Saturday 23), the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government updated the situation to an alert for rain in the high areas and the south and east-southeast slope of Tenerife, so the population is urged to take extreme precautions.

Sub-Zero Temperatures

During the past night, the National Park once again recorded sub-zero temperatures, allowing the precipitation in the form of snow that fell last Saturday to remain.

According to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), Izaña had the coldest temperature in all of the Canary Islands last night, dropping to 2.6 degrees below zero around four in the morning.

In addition, intense wind continues to blow in the summits, with gusts of up to 97 kilometers per hour, which gives Teide a wintry image at the beginning of spring.
