In an exciting update, it has been revealed that the upcoming Go Fit sports complex in Santa Cruz’s capital will have its grand opening in January 2025, instead of the initially planned date. This announcement was made by the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, during a recent site visit. The new facility, located in the former sports pavilion, is set to revolutionise the city’s sports landscape. With a tenfold increase in capacity, from accommodating a mere thousand users to over 10,000, the revamped space will bear the name of Paco Álvarez.
During the inspection, Bermúdez was joined by Javier Rivero, the Councilor for Infrastructure, Alicia Cebrián, the Councilor for Sports, and Zaida González, the individual responsible for the Health-La Salle district. Bermúdez expressed his gratitude towards an external company, Go Fit, for their significant investment in the project, without which Santa Cruz would not have been able to undertake this development.
Rivero emphasised that the construction of the new sports hub will not only enhance the block it is situated in but will also create over 200 parking spaces for user convenience, along with numerous job opportunities in the facility’s management.
The state-of-the-art facilities at the complex, including a pool named after David González, will boast three pools of different types, a spacious 1,700 square meter weight room, versatile multipurpose zones, a recreational area, and a cafeteria.
Alfonso Arroyo, representing Go Fit, assured that the construction is progressing well and aims to provide a welcoming environment for all visitors. He mentioned that guided tours of the facility will be organised for citizens to explore the various offerings. Additionally, Arroyo disclosed that the Go Fit sports complex has already attracted 5,000 registrations from eager individuals seeking to be part of this new venture.
Highlighting the inclusivity of the project, Councilor for Sports, Alicia Cebrián, noted that 80% of sports enthusiasts engage in activities recreationally rather than through formal federations. She stressed that the project is designed to cater to this demographic and their families, as well as the remaining 20% consisting of individual practitioners and club members from the capital.
With an investment exceeding 20 million euros, the new sports hall will feature a multipurpose sports court with wooden flooring, changing rooms, referee booths, storage facilities, and more, all designed for user convenience.
Natural lighting will illuminate the pavilion through expansive windows opening towards the Quico Cabrera pavilion and Eduardo Zamacois street, enhancing the overall ambience. The upper section will accommodate squash courts adjacent to the tennis courts, providing accessible entry points.
The external areas surrounding the project serve multiple functions, including a public plaza connecting streets, children’s play areas, and recreational spaces. A designated racquet sports zone will house tennis and paddle courts, further enriching the community infrastructure surrounding the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium.
Lastly, a two-level underground parking facility, with room for 290 cars and 6 spaces for disabled individuals, will ensure convenient access for visitors.
