Is our school on the verge of collapse while authorities turn a blind eye?” This question was raised on social media by the Association of Parents and Students (AMPA) of CEIP Toscal Longuera in Los Realejos. The school’s structure has been deteriorating for over seven years due to water leaks, causing alarm and unease among families. However, it has also brought attention back to the school from the competent authorities – the City Council and the Government of the Canary Islands. The primary building for the Primary students is the main concern, as the Infant building, being newer, does not face any issues.

AMPA President, Patricia García Fariña, explains that the problem stems from the poor condition of the sanitary slab. Despite plans and approvals for renovation works, setbacks have delayed the process. The initial technical solution proved unviable, leading to a more complex project, which is yet to commence. Frustrated by the lack of progress and the worsening condition of the building, AMPA sought responses from the Ministry of Education and the City Council without success.

Following social media reactions, stakeholders finally responded but assured that the building is not at risk of collapsing. Regardless, the delay in addressing the structural issues has raised concerns among the school community.

Reassurance from School Management

The school management of CEIP Toscal-Longuera extended gratitude to families for their support and responsibility towards the educational institution. They also provided reassurance that the renovation work is in progress, albeit at a slow pace. A meeting has been scheduled today to discuss the situation with the Councilor for Education and a municipal technician present to clarify the ongoing work.

Mayor Adolfo González expressed solidarity with the school and criticized the unnecessary alarm caused by the situation, which was also a topic of debate in a recent municipal session.
