The City Council of La Laguna, under the Municipal Services Department, is set to participate in Earth Hour once again. This coming Saturday, 23rd of March, the lights surrounding the La Concepción church will be switched off for one hour, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Fran Hernández, the Municipal Services Councilor, will lead this symbolic gesture in support of environmental sustainability.

Earth Hour, a global movement spearheaded by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), symbolizes the battle against climate change. La Laguna’s involvement is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to promote responsible energy usage and raise awareness on the significance of energy conservation.

This worldwide campaign aims to have millions of individuals and cities worldwide switch off their lights as a public demonstration in the fight against climate change. The invitation is to join this symbolic movement and continue progressing towards a model of sustainable development. Hernández emphasised that “La Laguna’s participation in Earth Hour goes beyond just a gesture; it is a tangible action showcasing our dedication to preserving the environment and adopting efficient, sustainable energy practices.”

“By turning off the lights in this iconic area of the historic centre for an hour, we aim to convey a clear message to citizens on the importance of reducing energy consumption,” he stated. This initiative extends beyond the local scale and is part of a global movement led by WWF worldwide.

“The collaboration with this international organisation reflects La Laguna’s commitment to the global environmental agenda and our readiness to collaborate with other entities and administrations to tackle the challenges of climate change,” he added.

La Laguna already has 58% of its public lighting using LED technology, with over 14,000 points installed in various neighbourhoods and towns. “This is a path we will continue on, to equip the public lighting service with this modern and efficient technology across all neighbourhoods and towns within the municipal territory,” stated the mayor.

Hernández urged citizens to also take part in this effort to amplify its impact, “a collective endeavour we hope will endure beyond this particular action as together we strive for a more sustainable future.”
