Emergency Preparedness in Tenerife: Training for Efficient Response

A video surfaces on social media showing two young women covered in blood being rescued after an accident. In this case, the injured individuals were actors, and the footage demonstrates how emergency services in Tenerife conduct drills to handle emergencies. Specifically, the Military Emergency Unit, the Fire Department, and the National and Local Police participated in an exercise involving casualties, smoke, and trapped vehicles.

The UME Barracks served as the setting for an evacuation and response drill held last week as part of the Mass Casualty Accidents Conference. The Autonomous Emergency Unit of the Red Cross collaborated in setting up the Medical Post and data processing team. Other entities involved included the Civil Guard, Civil Protection, and the Institute of Legal and Forensic Medicine of Santa Cruz.

The sound of the alarm signaled the start of the operation for all units. Ambulances, trucks, and patrols took the stage to rescue the numerous “casualties” scattered across the area. On this occasion, the victims were actors who, amidst laughter and prosthetics, acted being trapped or injured to be rescued by the emergency responders. Some scenarios involved stretchers, canine guides, and mountain descents.

Conference on Mass Casualty Accidents

The main goal of the Conference on Mass Casualty Accidents, organized by the UME, is to enhance the response capabilities for large-scale emergency situations and promote coordination among institutions and professionals. The event took place at the School of Nursing at the University of La Laguna, with support from the Chair and the Official College of Nurses of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The conference featured disaster management experts, rescue professionals, and first responders who shared their expertise and experiences with attendees.
