Rosa Dávila, President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, unveiled plans to journey to Brussels alongside a delegation from the Canary Islands Government. Their objective is to petition for the incorporation of the Tenerife train project into the pan-European transport grid. This announcement was made during a press conference held to disclose the Government Council’s resolutions. Dávila expressed regret over the lack of attention the former regional government dedicated to this endeavour, remarking that Europe’s funds amounting to over €25 billion until 2027 are now inaccessible.
Dávila expressed confidence in Brussels considering factors such as insularity and the region’s Outermost Region status to integrate the Island into the network. She emphasised that the railway is an essential initiative that will enhance mobility and promote decarbonisation.
The President insisted on collaborating closely with the Ministry of Transport during negotiations and hinted at the potential inclusion of the Tenerife train project in the national network, contingent on the central government’s willingness to address the prevailing uncertainties. Consequently, she urged the sector’s minister, Óscar Puente, to expedite the deliberations of the technical commission.
Additionally, Dávila extended her support to the parliamentary committee dealing with demographic challenges. She also endorsed the upcoming conference of council presidents, highlighting the demographic contrasts between the Green Islands and the Capital Islands, demonstrating variations within each island.
