SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 19th March (EUROPA PRESS) –

Ashotel-associated hotels and other lodging establishments in Tenerife province have achieved an average reservation rate of 85.34% for Easter, spanning from March 24 to 31, according to an internal survey conducted by the hotel management association through its Tourism Competitiveness and Sustainable Development Observatory for major holiday seasons.

Breakdown by island reveals Tenerife at 85.51%, while La Palma shows a reservation rate of 81.46%. La Palma faces challenges, with over 4,000 tourist beds in the Puerto Naos area (Los Llanos de Aridane) still closed due to harmful gases from the 2021 eruption. On the other hand, La Gomera enjoys positive progress, reaching 84.3% reservations for the holiday week, and El Hierro records a 84.8% reservation rate for this period.

Regarding different areas of Tenerife, the south leads with an average of 87.4% reservations, while the north currently stands at 79.6%, and the metropolitan area, as is typical during this less popular period, at an average of 67.7%. All three areas are showing higher figures compared to Easter 2023.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES.

The subsector of tourist accommodations currently provides employment to 32,035 individuals in Santa Cruz de Tenerife province (latest available data from February 2024), marking an almost 7% increase from the same month the previous year, as per Social Security affiliation figures compiled by the Canarian Institute of Statistics (Istac).

On Tenerife island, the sector employs 30,215 individuals, reflecting a 7.2% growth from February 2023. Similar growth trends are observed on the other islands in the province, with 903 individuals working in accommodation establishments in La Palma (1.9% increase from last year), 821 in La Gomera (+4.6%), and 96 in El Hierro (+11.6%).

Despite this rise in employment, there remains a demand for labour across various roles in the sector. Ashotel regularly posts job opportunities on its Employment Portal, which collates offers from its associated establishments. In 2023, nearly 600 offers were managed, resulting in the placement of almost 1,200 individuals in Tenerife province.

Ashotel’s manager, Juan Pablo González, positively assesses the data and emphasises that during holiday periods like Holy Week, which typically experience increased occupancy, there is not only an influx of foreign tourists who usually visit during peak seasons but also a rise in domestic tourists and Canarian residents seeking a few days of leisure. González underlines that the strong employment figures throughout the season also contribute to stable job creation in a sector that drives the Islands’ economy.
