SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 18th March (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildos of Tenerife and La Palma have initiated discussions to establish a cooperative framework aimed at enhancing services for their citizens. This was disclosed today, Monday, following a meeting held at the Tenerife Town Council, attended by the island’s president, Rosa Dávila, and her counterpart, Sergio Rodríguez.

Also in attendance were the insular counselor of the Presidency, Administration and Public Service, Territorial Planning and Historical Heritage, José Miguel Ruano; the Minister of the Treasury, Juan Carlos Pérez Frías; the Minister of Employment and Education, Efraín Medina; the Minister of Research, Innovation and Development, Juan José Martínez, and the Minister of Youth and Training, Serafín Mesa.

Representatives from the Cabildo of La Palma included the Minister of Economic Promotion, Commerce, Digital Transformation, and delegate of the Society for the Promotion and Economic and Social Development of La Palma, Miriam Perestelo, and the Minister of Culture, Education, Heritage, and Crafts, Pablo, Diaz.

Rosa Dávila elaborated that the meeting “established a collaborative agreement framework to pool our expertise and resources in serving citizens for the sustainable development of both islands.”

Echoing this sentiment, the president highlighted that although Tenerife and La Palma have distinct realities, they do share commonalities: “both islands were ravaged by two significant fires last summer, hence our experiences in fire prevention and extinguishing, as well as agricultural strategies to boost competitiveness; moreover, both islands are involved in astrophysics, shaping the development of this sector.”

“We are also undertaking initiatives in technology such as fibre optics or business attraction through the Scientific and Technological Park and the Technological Institute of Renewable Energies (ITER). Our aim is to collaborate in order to foster community growth, particularly among the youth, to prevent further depopulation and retain young, innovative talent,” she added

On his part, Sergio Rodríguez, the president of the Cabildo of La Palma; expressed contentment with the meeting and emphasised that La Palma “is navigating through a complex phase” and they are keen on leveraging “the knowledge and experience of a leading entity like the Cabildo of Tenerife across various domains.” Consequently, they discussed an approach for mutual collaboration that would benefit both islands. “It is a fresh approach that needs to be implemented, and I believe that the extensive experience and progress of the Cabildo of Tenerife in numerous sectors can aid us in becoming a much more competitive island and certainly contribute to the island’s development,” he appended.
