The Tenerife Cabildo, in collaboration with the insular Crafts company and the Arafo City Council, have kicked off the XXVI Edition of the Regional Crafts Fair on Saturday. The event, scheduled for this weekend at Plaza San Juan Degollado and its surroundings, from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., was opened by the Cabildo’s president, Rosa Dávila, accompanied by the Minister of Employment and Education, Efraín Medina, and Arafo’s mayor, Juan Ramón Martín.
Rosa Dávila extended her congratulations to all the artisans and participants in the Regional Fair, emphasizing the significance of artisanal work as a unifying element of Canarian identity. “For 26 years, we’ve been celebrating the craftmanship of many individuals who come to showcase the work they perform daily with their skilled hands. They embody Canarian heritage, identity, and the dedication behind each unique and exceptional piece. There’s research and study behind each exhibit, and it’s a pleasure to have people come, enjoy, and make purchases,” stated the island’s president.
Efraín Medina expressed his enthusiasm for this fair, saying, “We’ve initiated a two-month program of activities in Arafo, and I want to express my gratitude to the team that makes all of this possible. We are thrilled not only about this fair but also for the upcoming ones. We’re already working in all the towns and regions. We appreciate the support from the Cabildo’s president, Rosa Dávila, in this area, and this is why we proudly hold the National Crafts Award.”
Juan Ramón Martín thanked the Cabildo for organizing the event and mentioned that in this edition, they aimed to innovate. “We’ve introduced a fresh approach by incorporating three exhibitions, talks, and concerts, which have been tremendously successful and have been enjoyed as unique events leading up to the regional fair.”
The Fair features 50 stands offering more than 30 artisanal and gastronomic varieties, showcasing traditional pottery, embroidery, sculpture, palm, vera, cane and wicker basketry, cutlery, glassware, rosettes, stonework, and percussion and wind musical instruments.
The main highlight of this edition has been the extensive pre-Fair program, including the exhibition ‘Popular clothing in Tenerife in the 20th century’ at the Juan Carlos I Auditorium; the micro-concert ‘Sew and Sing’ by Claudia Álamo and guitarist Danny Márquez, also held at the auditorium; the ‘Framed Magas’ exhibition at Casona Secundino Delgado until March 29, and the ‘Ibero-American Musical Instruments’ exhibition at the Juan Carlos I Auditorium until March 17.
Additionally, a series of educational activities have been arranged for schoolchildren and the general public, featuring traditional clothing training sessions, traditional pottery workshops, percussion instrument workshops, as well as jewelry and glassware demonstrations.
