Investigation underway after a large brown patch is spotted off the coast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s City Council, under the Public Services division, conducted an assessment on Thursday after a sizeable brown patch was observed floating near the coastline, a topic that gained attention on social media among some residents.

Council technicians confirmed on Friday morning that the spot was not a spill, as stated by the city council. It was identified as algae that had drifted from the island’s southern region to this location due to prevailing sea conditions.

City Council officials noted the presence of the algae late on Thursday and dispatched technicians to the site early on Friday to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the sea area, ensuring it was visually and analytically inspected to determine the nature of the occurrence.

Although it was identified as a mass of algae, water samples were collected to assess its quality. It was clarified that such occurrences are part of natural sea processes that typically resolve on their own.

The Public Services department highlighted the routine water testing conducted in different bathing areas to ensure their safety and to mitigate any potential health risks.
