The shared car application has reached the University of La Laguna. Metrotenerife, the tram company under the Island Council, recently introduced the ten+ride app to ULL. This tool is made available to the academic community as another measure to alleviate the traffic chaos on the Island. Estimates suggest that its full operation will take about 15,000 vehicles out of campus parking lots and congested roads, especially the TF-5, the North motorway, during peak morning hours by staggering student access –later extending to teachers and Administrative and Services Staff (PAS)– to reduce the daily traffic jams.
The Island’s Mobility Councillor and President of Metrotenerife, Eulalia García, held a technical meeting with ULL officials to present the functionality of the digital platform, designed in coordination with the company Avantic, which facilitates shared vehicle usage as an alternative. The meeting was attended by Pedro Ribeiro, the company’s manager, and on behalf of ULL, Candela Díaz, Vice Chancellor for Sustainability and Infrastructure. The app was awarded in 2018 by the prestigious Global Light Rail Award in the categories of Best Environmental and Sustainability Initiative and Vision of the Year. The Island Council ensures “continued work with social agents, institutions, and entities in improving the Island’s mobility.” A commitment since the beginning of the current term.
