SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 12th March (EUROPA PRESS) –

The leader of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, called on the State Government today to take “decisive and immediate” measures to address the pressing issue that the archipelago is facing. In 2023 alone, 39,910 migrants arrived on its shores, surpassing the numbers seen back in 2006 when 31,180 foreigners made the journey by sea.

During his address, Fernando Clavijo expressed his desire not to create conflict over an issue that plagued the previous administration of the Pact of Flowers and is now supported by the current coalition of CC and PP. However, he highlighted the lack of support from other regions in Spain and the failure of the central government to take prompt action on this matter despite the gravity of the situation.

Clavijo emphasised the considerable efforts being made by the Autonomous Community to provide for over 5,500 children under their care. “We have a responsibility to take care of these children in the best possible way, in a manner befitting their needs. We cannot turn a blind eye as many have done for far too long,” he stated.
