SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 9th March (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Department of Public Services in Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has imposed a fine of 2,500 euros on a resident who, on 25th November 2023, left a bag of garbage leaking liquids outside the designated containers while they were empty.
According to a statement released by the City Council, this offence falls under the serious category outlined in the Municipal Ordinance for Waste Management and Public Space Cleaning, with penalties ranging from 2,000 to 100,000 euros.
Addressing the issue, Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated, “It is our responsibility to penalise those individuals who do not abide by the rules of communal living and who, through such actions, degrade public spaces and the city’s assets, which belong to everyone and require significant effort and funds to maintain in optimal conditions.”
Meanwhile, Public Services Councillor Carlos Tarife remarked, “We cannot afford to overlook these violations, which undoubtedly demonstrate a lack of respect towards other residents and the city’s sanitation service.”
He further emphasised, “Environmental offences must be met with consequences, and in cases involving hazardous materials or substances that pollute the environment, fines can range from 20,000 to 600,000 euros.”
Additionally, the police report noted that at the scene, “the individual in question was observed attempting to clean up the spills of liquid waste on the public street using soap and water. These spills originated from black garbage bags containing decomposing organic matter, which leaked and were left outside the nearest containers.”
It was also reported that “a pool of liquid waste emitting a foul odour was evident, leading to complaints from nearby shop owners and pedestrians throughout the duration of the police intervention.”
