18 minutes of talk to unleash your magic and improve mental health. This is the philosophy of the fourth edition of the TEDx talks – Technology, Education, and Design, more local brand of the American matrix – Plazaweyler – the seal of the celebration on the island and in the capital. The event will take place on the 13th next month, from 17:00 to 19:00, at Tenerife Arts Space (TEA). Six professional experts will take the stage to share their knowledge with a focus on a delicate and current topic such as mental health, especially among young people. Each speaker will have 18 minutes to reach the minds and hearts of the audience that day with the concept of undertaking as the central axis from a dual perspective: business and personal.
The initiative is possible thanks to a public-private partnership between the Island Corporation, through the Youth area, and the entity that has been organizing the event for the past three years. The sponsor, represented by the island councilor Serafín Mesa, and the spokesperson Raquel Valle were present to introduce it. Promoting mental health and personal growth is the goal always under the motto Release Your Magic.
Sponsorship. Serafín Mesa valued “the unbeatable lineup of speakers at the event, complementing a wide variety of activities that enhance innovation, creativity, and especially mental health.” He believes that “it is an important issue, not only for the youth but for society in general to which we must give visibility.” Mesa highlighted the work of his department and others such as Education for Prevention. Both want to “contribute our bit to support and provide free and accessible tools to the entire population, young or not, affected by this serious problem.” He ended with an invitation: “Nothing better than the surname of Weyler square because there is the tram stop that leads to TEA. Just go down a few meters.”
Entrepreneurial. The organizer of the talks, Raquel Valle, explained that “TEDx aims to be the platform for entrepreneurs who want to spread their talent from Canary Islands“. She revealed that in this edition they have received over 200 applications from which they selected six experts who, she summarized, “stand out for their extensive experience and professional recognition.” She emphasized that the event targets entrepreneurs and business owners, but is also open to “all those who want to hear stories and get motivated.”
Speakers. Six speakers will address, from different perspectives, the importance of mental health through creativity and innovation. Each talk will have an exact duration of 18 minutes. Bruno Bernal runs a business focused on ant breeding in the Canary Islands and creates 3D ant farms that are marketed worldwide. On the other hand, Noelia Hernández, a psychologist and sexologist, works on sexual intelligence in a fun and positive way. Meanwhile, Julia Hernández specializes in middle-aged women who are stuck and want to improve their personal and professional development.
Jennifer Montesdeoca is a clinical psychologist. Since 2019, she has been conducting workshops and talks aimed at all audiences in both the health and entrepreneurial fields who need psychological support. Jota y Punto, a presenter, podcaster, speaker, and consultant, helps them deal with setbacks and learn from mistakes. Finally, Eduardo Vera, a psychiatrist and professor in the MIR exams, is based on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illnesses to improve the user’s quality of life.
Activities. Alongside the talks, a programme of activities related to the subject will be developed through associations dedicated to well-being, equality, and diversity.
These actions will include an exhibition by the Canarian illustrator Elvira Piedra – who has participated in the Merkarte project promoted by the Youth Department – highlighting women’s equality and freedom; a performance by the classical and fusion ballet of Clara Benítez with Pablo Acosta on guitar; a demonstration by the Karate Club Arge from the Casa de Venezuela and, as the event’s finale, a parade featuring middle-aged people and those with functional diversity by Canarian designer Mado Vigarok who has just succeeded at Paris Fashion Week.
