SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 6th March (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Parliament of the Canary Islands has chosen to mark the occasion of 8th March, International Women’s Day, with multiple events aiming to champion the “joint fight of women and men for genuine equality.”
The Canarian Chamber is organising various events, conferences, round tables, and initiatives on 7th and 8th March, with President Astrid Pérez stating that these activities will “help progress towards the collective challenge of achieving complete equality.”
A total of eight events will take place, with the Chamber President keen on “emphasising that there is still much work to be done; stressing the need to advance together in the shared pursuit of total equality, and honouring the memory of individuals like Clara Campoamor, who fought diligently so that women today possess identical rights as men.”
On Thursday, 7th March, commencing at 10:10 a.m., the President of the Canary Islands Parliament will kick off the ‘Parliament and Equality’ events by officially renaming two chambers in the Chamber which previously had non-inclusive titles.
The Chamber of Presidents will be rebranded as the Chamber of Presidents, “ensuring that the women who have presided over this institution throughout its history are no longer overlooked,” Pérez remarked.
Additionally, the Chamber of Deputies, which failed to acknowledge the presence of women, “will now be known as the Chamber 8 Islands.”
The opening day of ‘Parliament and Equality’ activities will carry on at 10:30 a.m. in the Europa Room with a presentation by Margarita Álvarez Pérez de Zabalza, founder and president of the Coca Cola Institute of Happiness and advocate of the Observatory of Innovation in Employment and Education.
At 12:30 p.m., Yasmina Newport Perdomo, CEO of the Newport Group, will deliver a speech on women in leadership positions. Following the lunch break, the day will resume at 5:10 p.m. with a panel discussion titled “Women at the Helm of Institutions”, featuring the President of the Canary Islands Parliament, Astrid Pérez; the President of the Tenerife Island Council, Rosa Dávila; the Minister of Social Welfare and Equality of the Canary Islands Government, María Candelaria Delgado Toledo, and Ana Rosa Mena, Mayor of Tegueste.
The discussion on the contribution of equality groups, involving deputies from the various Parliamentary Groups of the Canary Islands Chamber, will conclude with a round of questions from representatives of attending associations.
TRIBUTE TO CLARA CAMPOAMOR
Activities on 8th March will commence at 10:15 a.m. with the unveiling of the sculpture “To Clara Campoamor: Loyalty and Tenacity” in the entrance hall, a piece gifted by artist Máximo Riol Cimas. This sculpture honours the lawyer and politician who played a pivotal role in granting Spanish women the right to vote in 1931. Scheduled for 11:50 a.m. in the Europa Room is the premiere of the institutional video of the Canary Islands Parliament for the occasion of 8th March.
