La Laguna’s Plaza del Adelantado, a key focal point in the historical centre, has been grappling with pavement issues for some time now, with deformities and uneven surfaces across various areas. The City Council of La Laguna is currently undertaking efforts to address these problem areas as an interim measure to assess the overall condition of the square, in anticipation of the tender for the development of a restoration project.

According to Ángel Chinea, the councilor overseeing Works and Infrastructure, “three specific zones will be identified, primarily towards the square’s Consistorio Street end, where indications suggest that the pavement deformities are a result of soil dryness caused by drought, along with damage to tree roots, posing significant challenges for pedestrians, especially those with restricted mobility.”

In these demarcated zones, the plan is to “lift tiles and paving stones to examine the ground and tree roots’ condition,” following which necessary repairs will be carried out. These areas have already been cordoned off, with estimates suggesting that the groundwork studies and repairs will span a maximum of three months.

Furthermore, Ángel Chinea stated, “This preliminary study will provide crucial insights to be included in the tender process for the development of the Plaza del Adelantado restoration project, which is currently in its initial phases.”

Intrinsic natural and cultural significance

“We anticipate that within three months, we will possess all necessary data to initiate the tender for the project development, which will require specific assessments related to its historical and cultural importance, soil characteristics, etc.,” indicated the councilor, emphasizing that “the current state of the square necessitates prompt intervention.”

“While we need to exercise caution during the intervention due to its outstanding natural and environmental worth, featuring approximately 80 trees, many of considerable size, and its unquestionable heritage significance,” Ángel Chinea highlighted.
