Andrés Miranda has passed away, former president of the Tenerife Island Council in the early 70s. The island council itself announced that the former island leader passed away on Saturday, 2nd of March, at the age of 90.

The politician, born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, held positions in local administration since 1967 and even held positions of responsibility in the national government, then under the rule of Francisco Franco.

The president of the Tenerife Island Council, Rosa Dávila, has conveyed her condolences to Andrés Miranda’s family and close ones, while the institution’s vice president, Lope Afonso, has expressed his sorrow on social media.

Andrés Agustín Miranda Hernández was born in 1934 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. He was a councillor of the City Council of the Island’s capital between 1967 and 1970.

A year later, he held the position of Director General of Pharmacy and was a member of the Cortes when he was appointed president of the Tenerife Island Council, a position he held until January 1974.

Thus, he succeeded Galván Bello in the first of his two terms and was replaced in the island position by Rafael Clavijo, who was the last president of the Island Council during the Franco era.

In the democratic period, Andrés Miranda, in 1982, joined the Popular Alliance, a party he represented in the Parliament of the Canary Islands until 1986, and in 2002 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Tenerife.

In addition to the current heads of the island council, the former island president, Pedro Martín, has also extended his condolences, highlighting that “being the president of the Tenerife Island Council demands great responsibility, which Andrés Miranda took on between 1971 and 1974″. “Beyond any differences, my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones. May he rest in peace,” Martín concludes.

Even the President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, has wanted to remember the figure of the former president from Tenerife.
