The Tenerife Island Council, through the Highways Department, is continuing with the construction of a pedestrian footbridge at the Padre Anchieta junction on the TF-5 motorway. The tasks will involve removing Concrete New Jersey barriers and installing height clearances. Highways Councillor Dámaso Arteaga advises drivers passing through this area to “take extra precautions and follow the signs and instructions of the workers at all times.”

The works will be carried out from Monday (4th of March) at 10:00 pm until Tuesday (5th of March) at 5:00 am. For the completion of these tasks, several access roads to the Padre Anchieta roundabout will be affected. Thus, on Monday (4th of March) from 10:00 pm to 11:00 pm, access to Astrofísico Francisco Suárez Avenue from the aforementioned roundabout will be closed, redirecting traffic onto TF-24 and TF-265.

Subsequently, from 11:30 pm to 12:30 am, access to the mentioned roundabout from the TF-5 (Northbound) will be cut off, and traffic will be diverted through the Lora y Tamayo and San Benito junctions. Finally, from 1:00 am to 5:00 am on Tuesday morning (5th of March), access to the Padre Anchieta roundabout from Trinidad Avenue will be closed, with traffic diverted through Pedro Zerolo Street.

The construction of the Padre Anchieta pedestrian footbridge is part of the planned actions by the Council to enhance road safety conditions and mobility on the island. Noteworthy are the road surface rehabilitation works and comprehensive safety improvements on roads TF-652, TF-653, and TF-662, costing two million Euros.

Furthermore, the budget for 2024 allocates a sum of 4.2 million Euros for the rehabilitation of 16 roads, bypasses, and crossings, in addition to 34.8 million Euros for road improvement projects transferred, such as TF-12 in Anaga or road surface rehabilitation on TF-1.

Improving the roads on Tenerife forms part of a comprehensive plan to enhance the island’s mobility, complementing the measures taken by the public body to address traffic issues such as restricting heavy vehicles during peak hours; strengthening public transportation with the fleet renewal of Titsa, hiring new drivers, and introducing university shuttles; reducing the travel limit for free transport; the Insular Sustainable Mobility Plan, and agreements with Ashotel and the University of La Laguna, among other measures.
