SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27th February (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister in charge of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility for the Canary Islands Government, Pablo Rodríguez, has revealed that starting this Friday, on the 1st of March, the Ministry will commence a series of meetings in Lanzarote to introduce the new legislative decree concerning urgent measures related to housing to the councils and municipalities across the archipelago.
This announcement was made during the Plenary Session of Parliament, where Pablo Rodríguez emphasized the department’s efforts to enhance the search for solutions to the housing crisis currently faced by the archipelago.
“Actions needed to be taken, and we have done just that. We have diligently worked to expedite stagnant processes and make strategic decisions aimed at addressing the property shortage. Over the past seven months, we have successfully revitalized the housing policies of the Canary Islands Government, providing tools such as the emergency plan and the legislative decree on urgent measures, both compatible with and complementary to the Canary Islands Housing Plan and the State Plan,” explained the minister.
Rodríguez highlighted that the budget execution of the Canary Housing Institute stood at just over 30% in May 2023, “however, we have managed to significantly increase this figure and by the end of the year, we achieved a 90% execution rate, including the funds from the Next Generation, with 72% executed as of December 31st.”
The minister underlined that despite all parliamentary groups concurring on the diagnosis, “none have presented tangible and effective solutions, beyond plans that have remained unimplemented and failed to yield the expected results.” “Over the past seven months, we have improved budget execution, approved an emergency housing plan, and introduced a legislative decree to stimulate property turnover in the market, particularly in the case of protected properties, thus streamlining the process,” he elaborated.
Furthermore, he pointed out that in the last six months, the Government has initiated numerous processes to release more than 1,200 properties onto the market this year. Currently, there are 510 properties in various stages of development in Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife, with 780 homes under construction to be put up for tender.
