El Fraile is one of the nuclei that has registered the highest population growth in the south of the Island. DA

El Fraile will have video surveillance cameras. The City Council of Arona has obtained this week the authorization of the delegation of the Government in the Canary Islands, to install them, after years of demands from the residents of the urban nucleus.

The current government group made a commitment to citizens, not only with the incorporation of cameras, but also with the reopening of the El Fraile Security Office. The latter is already a reality since it started operating again last March.

It should be noted that this year, in addition, the Arona City Council obtained authorization to place video surveillance cameras in the area known as Las Verónicas, in Playa de las Américas, a historical claim of the merchants and businessmen in the area, and that already have funding.

The procedures for these two facilities were initiated in the previous term, when the mayor, José Julián Mena, met with the then delegate of the Government in the Canary Islands, Elena Máñez, in El Fraile in 2018, during the celebration of a Local Security Board in which this was one of the main points to be discussed. In May 2019, there was another meeting with the Government Subdelegate, Javier Plata.

Already in the current mandate, the Councilor for the Security area, Francisco Marichal, has promoted the installation of cameras in different parts of Arona. The area of Las Verónicas was the first to obtain authorization and is now joined by El Fraile. The authorization of cameras of this type requires not only the request of the municipality and the authorization of the Government Delegation, but also a process that includes reports from the State security forces and bodies, the Local Police and the Commission of Guarantees of the Canary Islands Video Surveillance. Thanks to this, Arona will be able to install a total of 16 fixed video cameras in the areas most demanded by the residents of the El Fraile nucleus.

In recent months, the Arona City Council has notably reinforced security in the municipality, with the incorporation of 31 Local Police officers, the first increase in more than a decade, the extension of hours in the security office of El Fraile or the incorporation of more than fifteen vehicles, among other measures.

The mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena has explained that “after years of demands and promises, serious and rigorous work on security matters has allowed the municipality to take an important step forward with the reinforcement of security and commitment to modernization. Both the cameras in Las Verónicas and in El Fraile strengthen Arona as a safe municipality for its residents and for the people who visit us every year ”.

For his part, Francisco Marichal, Security Councilor, underlines that “since the beginning of the mandate we have not stopped moving forward to make Arona a safe and reliable municipality and tourist destination, notably reinforcing the number of troops and the material resources of the Local police. We have to continue working hand in hand with the rest of the Administrations, which have not stopped collaborating and lending us their support ”. Ruth Lorenzo, councilor for Citizen Participation, emphasizes “the importance of these video surveillance cameras, since the citizens of El Fraile have fought and claimed their installation for years.

Like the Security Office, which has been reopened this year with an extension of the schedule, and in which there is also the AronaMedia program unit, which is coordinated with the Local Police for certain services, and which is giving very good results. positive for the resolution of conflicts between neighbors or relatives. It is a really effective service –he added-, free and that allows solving many of the conflicts that are generated in daily life in a dialogical way ”.
