SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27th Feb (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister overseeing Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity, and Sports for the Canary Islands, Poli Suárez, has declared the acceleration of various projects relating to La Palma, with a significant focus on reconstructing the Early Childhood and Primary Education Centre (CEIP) La Laguna. This institution suffered severe damage during the recent volcanic eruption on the island.
Suárez mentioned that, under the supervision of the General Directorate of Educational Infrastructure and Equipment, led by Iván González, the tender for drafting the reconstruction plan for the centre will commence in the upcoming weeks. Simultaneously, efforts will be made to clear the debris from the site.
The Minister is honouring a promise made during a visit last September to the educational community of the La Laguna centre in Los Llanos de Aridane, which was devastated by the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano.
Another project set to progress in La Palma is the restoration of CEIP Mariela Cáceres Pérez, also located in Los Llanos de Aridane. Issues arising from subpar construction have led to significant leaks whenever it rains.
The project, already designed and estimated at around 300,000 euros, will soon be up for tender. It aims to repair the problematic roof, false ceilings, and address various humidity issues.
Additionally, the Education Ministry is evaluating the condition of other educational facilities in La Palma to determine priorities for swift and medium-term enhancement.
Among the establishments that could benefit from improvements are CEIP Gabriel Duque Acosta and José Pérez Vidal in Santa Cruz de La Palma, as well as El Dorador Special Education Centre (CEE) and Luis Cobiella Cuevas Secondary Education Institute (IES) in the island’s capital. Also under consideration are IES José María Pérez Pulido and CEIP Mayantigo in Los Llanos de Aridane; Barlovento Compulsory Education Centre (CEO) in the homonymous municipality; and CEIP Santo Domingo in Garafía.
IES Las Breñas and CEIP Botazo in Breña Baja and Breña Alta, respectively; CEO Juan XXIII in Tazacorte; as well as IES in Puntagorda and CEO in Tijarafe are also earmarked for future enhancements.
