SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 26th February (EUROPA PRESS) –

A 61-year-old man, with a criminal record, has been arrested by the National Police for allegedly illegally possessing weapons and storing ammunition for the second time. Following the detainee’s hearing, the judicial authority ordered his detention as a precautionary measure.

The seizure of nine firearms, initially identified as functional, marks the conclusion of a police operation that, across two phases, enabled law enforcement to confiscate over 1,200 cartridges along with seven handguns and two rifles in a rural estate and various storage units in Arona.

National Police investigators, during an operation in February 2023 in the town of La Camella, apprehended the individual and seized over 1,200 cartridges from him. Despite having strong suspicions about the illegal possession of firearms by the detainee, the authorities did not uncover any during the initial searches.

Nonetheless, the agents persisted in their investigation until earlier this year when it led them to a series of storage units in the municipality of Arona, where the unlawfully held firearms allegedly by the man were believed to be concealed. informed

Following judicial authorisation, law enforcement conducted searches at properties in Arona and La Camella, resulting in the discovery of nine firearms – seven handguns and two rifles; three blank pistols; two bladed weapons; and over 150 cartridges of various calibres, including 9 mm Parabellum and 38 special.

The National Police once again arrested the alleged perpetrator and transported him, along with the seized weapons and ammunition, to the police headquarters.

Following the detainee’s hearing, the judicial authority ordered his preventive detention. The National Police places particular emphasis on incidents of this nature, as it is crucial to maintain strict control over firearms and their circulation, all aimed at preventing weapons like those confiscated from infiltrating the illegal market, thereby posing a risk to citizens.
