Fishing gear, ropes, and buckets… have been some of the waste items collected by the Promemar Association from Lima Beach in Arafo, following a scheduled clean-up in the municipality. In total, 118 kilogrammes of garbage have been gathered, including other types of marine debris such as cans and plastic bottles.
The activity, carried out within their Project For a More Sustainable Ocean, showed that the majority of the waste found comes from the sea due to the effect of marine currents, with the presence of fishing gear typical of the Galicia area being notable. In addition to underwater and coastal clean-ups, this project includes environmental talks and exhibitions on marine litter.
“We not only aim to raise awareness among users of the area,” says the Promemar Association, “but also among the fishing industry that caring for the sea is caring for our own planet.” As they point out from this association, “our oceans provide us with 70% of the oxygen we breathe, so caring for them is also caring for our well-being.” This action took place on Saturday on the municipality’s coast by the Association, but the initiative could not have been successful without the sponsorship of various entities including Loro Parque Fundación and Hidráulica, as well as the collaboration of Poema del Mar, Asociación Deportivo-ambiental Kms Verdes, Tenerife Shipyards, Montesano, Marnin, Robyn Goods, Muvit, Asociaciones Vecinales de Canarias, Coca-Cola, Compañía Cervecera de Canarias, Fonteide, Solar Clic and NaturCiclo.
