During the recent city council plenary session in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it was announced that the tram project to extend line 2 along the Las Hespérides avenue was approved, eliminating the proposal to pass through Los Majuelos. This decision, supported by CC, PP, and Vox in the council, was met with resistance from the PSOE group, as well as local residents and businesses in the Southwest area.

The residents expressed their concerns in the session, opposing the imposition of the tram passing through Los Majuelos on the way to La Gallega. They argued that the existing Las Hespérides avenue provides a suitable route without disrupting the community and commercial activities in the area. The consensus was that the current project would negatively impact the neighbourhood, destroy green spaces, and serve partisan interests.

PSOE representatives, Patricia Hernández and Matilde Zambudio, strongly opposed the idea of the tram passing through Los Majuelos, advocating for the utilisation of Las Hespérides avenue instead. With tensions rising over the route extension, the debate highlighted the lack of consensus among different political parties and community stakeholders.

Despite the socialists’ efforts to alter the route plan, the council rejected their motion, prompting further discussions on the future of the tram project. Amidst the debate, Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez clarified that due to the lack of political agreement, the extension of the tram line through Los Majuelos Avenue would not proceed. The focus shifted towards enhancing the area through renovation projects and promoting local businesses until a consensus is reached.

In a unanimous decision, the council also approved a motion proposed by Vox to expedite rehabilitation works at the Hermano Pedro centre. This initiative aimed to improve care services for individuals with intellectual disabilities, addressing structural concerns and ensuring a safe environment for all stakeholders.

During the question period, concerns were raised about public hygiene issues during Carnival 2024, particularly regarding urination in the streets. The council clarified that only one fine was issued for this offence during the festivities, highlighting the importance of maintaining a clean and safe environment for all attendees.

In another query, the plan for the Igueste cemetery access road was discussed, raising the need for infrastructure improvements in the region. Additionally, details about upcoming sports programmes and initiatives were shared to enhance community engagement and participation in recreational activities.
