400,000 Revelers Estimated to Have Joined the Piñata Saturday in Santa Cruz de Tenerife


The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has approximated that 400,000 individuals “participated” in the Carnival parade from dawn until night on the second day of Carnival by Day, culminating in a concert by Luis Fonsi on Francisco La Roche Avenue.

According to the council, “the Carnival Piñata surpassed all expectations in terms of public attendance.”

During the 12-hour window from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., it was estimated that 56,590 vehicles entered the area, in addition to the journeys made by buses, trams, and taxis.

“The crowd filled the entire area between Francisco La Roche Avenue, Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena and Plaza de España, as well as adjacent streets such as La Marina, Villalba Hervás, and Emilio Calzadilla,” added the City Council, especially evident before Luis Fonsi’s concert.

The celebration lasted until the early hours of Sunday, marking the traditional Piñata Sunday activities.

Carnival 2024 will be bid farewell with a traditional pyrotechnic display in the Plaza de España, commencing at 6:00 p.m., where the theme of the next edition will also be revealed.

Municipal cleaning services, which deployed an extraordinary operation during the Carnival with over 120 workers and fifty vehicles, will intensify their efforts in the capital’s busiest areas starting from Monday the 19th.

Up until the Burial of the Sardine, over 300 tons of waste were removed during this special Carnival operation, showing a reduction compared to the previous year.

Additionally, during the last night, 104 people received assistance from the preventive device organized around the Carnival Hospital.

“Alcohol poisoning represented the main cause (38.4% of the total), along with trauma and falls, accounting for 15 cases,” noted the report, with 60 attentions counted during Carnival Day, with a third due to alcohol poisoning effects.

Four patients had to be transferred to hospital centers for specific treatments or diagnostic tests.

Statistics showed that 56 men and 48 women were treated during the last hours of the Carnival on the street.

Of those affected by alcohol consumption, 36 were adults and four were minors.

The City Council specified, “In these celebrations, accidents due to trauma and falls are also very common, with up to 15 cases reported due to this pathology. 11 situations framed in these circumstances were added.” Additionally, 31 people have been treated for common illnesses.

In the preventive and health program for youths managed by the Spanish Red Cross and coordinated with the Local Police unit attached to the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office, 15 minors, seven girls, and eight boys, aged between 15 and 17, were recorded and analyzed, 53% of whom suffered from alcohol poisoning.
