The budget for the construction of the comprehensive rehabilitation centre for the elderly in the north of the island has increased by over two million euros, reaching a total of 11 million. This infrastructure, financed by the Institute of Social and Health Care (IASS) – an organisation under the jurisdiction of the Island Council–, with funds from the Social and Health Infrastructure Plan for the island of Tenerife, will be built on a plot of land provided by the La Matanza City Council, which will be responsible for the urbanization work in the surrounding area.
The island’s Minister of Social Action, Águeda Fumero, and the mayor of the municipality, Ignacio Rodríguez, chaired the monitoring committee for this project, in which it was reported that there has been an increase in the initial budget, rising from 8.9 million to 11 million euros. The consequence of this measure is that “it will allow us to adapt the centre to current needs, as well as provide it with equipment.”
The construction of the comprehensive rehabilitation centre for the elderly in the north of Tenerife began after the project, whose tender was unsuccessful in the 2022 call, was unblocked, as reported by the island’s Social Action department.
The comprehensive rehabilitation centre for the elderly in La Matanza will have 90 places for specialised care, 55 of which will be residential and 35 will be daytime. The infrastructure is being built on an area of 4,445 square metres and will include a therapeutic pool.
Águeda Fumero emphasised the municipality’s commitment to this infrastructure, “which will improve the care quality in the Acentejo region.” In this regard, she stated that “for the Island Council, it is essential to establish a network of alliances with all the municipalities on the island and with third sector entities to work together to achieve the objective we have set for this term, which focuses on reducing the waiting list for these types of resources as much as possible, being aware of the historical deficit that Tenerife has had in this respect.”
