The Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is seeking a five-year prison sentence for a man, of French origin and with schizophrenia, accused of trying to harm a one-year-old baby in the capital of Tenerife.

The document, obtained by Europa Press, indicates that the incident occurred as the man was walking down a street and, feeling bothered by the presence of the stroller, “he grabbed it by surprise” and lifted and shook it in the air, each time “with more force” as he realized the damage he was causing.
Even though he was perfectly aware of the risk of the baby’s death, he attempted to throw the stroller with the baby inside onto the road where vehicles were passing, but the mother managed to prevent it.
Subsequently, the man attempted to leave the scene but was detained by the baby’s father, who ultimately was not physically harmed, until the National Police arrived.

Background

Similarly, days before the incident, he attacked the baby’s mother by grabbing and throwing her to the ground while waiting at a bus stop, causing her to suffer erythemas on her hands and mouth and a bruise on her buttocks, injuries that did not require medical or surgical treatment but took three days to heal.
Also, in another street of the city, he also assaulted another woman with a punch to the face “completely unexpectedly” while walking with two friends, leaving her unconscious, as stated by the Prosecutor.
The victim suffered a contusion on the zygomatic arch, a trauma to the right cheekbone and a hematoma on the left hip, injuries that took 10 days to heal without the need for medical treatment, three of which caused moderate personal harm.
The Prosecutor specifies that at the time of the incidents, the accused had his intellectual and volitional capacities partially affected due to a psychopathological decompensation resulting from the paranoid schizophrenia he suffers from.
Nevertheless, the Prosecutor considers the incidents to constitute a crime of attempted homicide and two minor offenses of injuries, and also requests the prohibition from approaching the baby within 100 meters for ten years, internment in a psychiatric center for seven and a half years, payment of a fine of 156 euros plus an additional 600 euros as compensation for the two assaulted women.
The trial is scheduled for next Wednesday at 10.00 am at the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
