SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 16 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo of Tenerife is in the final stages of drafting a project to enhance and restore the Altavista Shelter by the end of this month. The goal is to facilitate the commencement of the works within the year.

Blanca Pérez, Minister of Natural Environment, Sustainability and Security and Emergencies, emphasized that the restoration of the Altavista Shelter has been a key objective since assuming office: “We have concentrated on the necessary actions to reclaim the space and enhance the infrastructure facilities which were closed or neglected during the previous term.”

Perez explained that the focus is on revitalising this infrastructure for the benefit of both residents and visitors. Following its closure in November 2020, “people have continued to ascend and cause issues, and now we are in the process of addressing this situation and making it accessible to the public.” The Cabildo estimates an investment of approximately 1.2 million euros for the improvement and restoration of the infrastructure.

Insular director of the Natural Environment, Pedro Millán, highlighted that the shelter is a historic 19th-century building that played a vital role in safety and environmental oversight for the ascent of Teide, one of Spain’s most important and appealing trails. “It is also a crucial tool for enhancing the safety of visitors to the National Park,” he added.

Upon completion of the project draft set for delivery this month, the next steps will involve validation and certification of several reports that require authorization from the governing body, in this case, the Teide National Park, in line with current regulations. Once approved, the enhancement and restoration works at the Altavista Shelter will be tendered for procurement. The plans include the installation of an ecological treatment plant, a photovoltaic system, and the enhancement of energy efficiency alongside adequate thermal insulation.
