Although increasingly uncommon, obituaries have historically been one of the most effective methods to announce the passing of a person.

For years, they have filled newspaper pages with the intention of informing about someone’s death but also about the date, time, and place of the funeral.

It is usual for them to have a neutral text, with the name of the deceased and the day of their death, as well as a list of the closest relatives. But sometimes wit shines through in just a few lines.

People with a great sense of humour and an unusual philosophy choose to say goodbye in an original and more personal way but equally heartfelt.

“Nuts devourer”

And that is exactly what happened this past Saturday in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The obituary for the passing of Santiago Vara Herraiz leaves no doubt and as the text itself reads: “He lived and died as he wanted”.

But these words are only five of the affectionate, amusing, and surprising description of the man, who died on Friday, February 9, at the age of 68 on the island, and has caught the attention of anyone who reads it.

According to the publication, he is the founder of the acrobatic group Los Varini. Below is the obituary text:

“Santiago Vara Herraiz has passed away, founder of the acrobatic group “Los Varini”. Puller of invisible strings. Tamer of cockerels, lord of the mountain. Shareholder of Krüger. Chess champion of his house, nuts devourer. Procrastinator, non-believer, homosexual, and rebel. Open-minded and straightforward. The last great ceramist of the Canary Islands, the man who could have been gay. Composer and sole performer of the song “El bichito Lele”. Good father, better lover. He lived and died as he wanted. He is farewelled by his wife Chencha and his two wonderful children Violeta and Miguel Vara”.
