The San Roque slope, which extends from the Vía de Ronda curve to this lagoon neighborhood, is in the midst of a vegetation restoration phase. Goodbye to invasive species and welcome to the native ones. The Councilor for the Environment, Domingo Galván (CC), visited the ongoing work yesterday, which started in December. Currently, the creation of a pathway in the renewed area is being studied.

According to the City Council, since December – when the work began – a 20,200 square meter area has been treated. In total, 556 cubic meters of prickly pears, 202 of agaves, 121 of cat’s tail, 1.86 of lilies, and 77 of reeds have been removed. “Now we are starting the process of recovery with native plants, which will easily adapt to this area because they already existed in the past,” said Galván.

The data provided by the Council highlights that the area has a high density of indigenous flora, such as tabaibas, incense, Canary palm trees, verodes, dragon trees, granadillos, tederas, cornical, and tasaigo, among others. “The interventions have been carried out with the necessary measures to eradicate the exotic species without harming the indigenous varieties,” said Galván, who explained that “these are quite challenging tasks.” He added: “During the work, we encountered large and tough invasive species on the slopes, whose extraction also proved to be very laborious.”

The nationalist councilor revealed that they are about to finalize an agreement with the company Gesplan to continue the regeneration and maintenance work in this area. More specifically, the work is part of the environmental recovery project of the San Roque hillside and Mesa Mota, which the Council has been promoting.

This project, subsidized by the Public Employment Service in the Canary Islands, has enabled the hiring of 76 unemployed individuals as the workforce in charge of its execution: an agricultural technical engineer, three foremen, ten skilled laborers, and 62 general laborers. The Councilor for the Environment emphasized the positive results achieved so far with this project, and announced that the Council will continue with various maintenance actions in the coming months throughout the area through Gesplan.

“The Council’s idea is to enrich the space with various outdoor leisure options, in a respectful and sustainable manner, such as adapting paths and routes, conducting environmental education activities, installing signage to identify species, and organizing academic visits, among other options that are being considered,” added the councilor about the objectives.

Furthermore, Galván announced that a meeting with the residents of San Roque is scheduled for next week, to also gather their suggestions and ideas, provide them with firsthand information about the planned actions on the hillside, and collaboratively design the space in a participatory manner.
