The Tenerife Culture and Museums department of the Cabildo, has initiated the development of the Maritime and Naval Museum of Tenerife, which will be situated in the old Ventoso warehouse in the capital (formerly Musa), as reported by DIARIO DE AVISOS. To achieve this, the advisory commission has been formed within the Autonomous Organization of Museums and Centers (OAMC), involving the insular Corporation, the Government of the Canary Islands, the Port Authority, the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Canarian Correíllo La Palma Foundation and the Tertulia Amigos.
The Vice President and Minister of Tourism, Lope Afonso, emphasised the obligation of the Cabildo to “recover, conserve, organise and disseminate the heritage, culture and history of Tenerife.” He stated, “With this initiative, Tenerife will have a Maritime and Naval Museum that will enable a deeper understanding of the city’s history, disseminate the milestones and factors that have shaped it into the city it is today, and provide visitors with an insight into how the capital and Tenerife have become a pioneering island.” The Minister of Culture and Museums of Tenerife, José Carlos Acha, highlighted the long-standing relationship of Tenerife with the sea and the absence of museums on the island for decades. He stated, “This is why the Ventoso warehouse, built in 1919 to accommodate the old shipyards of the Port Works Board, has been selected as the museum’s headquarters, which will also house a historic ship such as the Correíllo La Palma, docked in front of the facility.”Acha explained that the museum will be opened in two phases, with the first phase to condition the property for an exhibition linked to the Correíllo La Palma and subsequently, a second phase focused on the Naval museum itself, to be located in an annex building planned for construction at the rear of the Ventoso warehouse, on port land.
He added, “The newly formed commission aims to ensure the museum’s objectives; handle the architectural and museographic projects for its location, and oversee administrative acts, reports, and permits of the participating institutions. It will also be responsible for proposing the acquisition of funds and collections.”
