Educo launches an emotional support project for children on La Palma

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 3 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The NGO Educo will launch an emotional support project for children on the island of La Palma in coordination with the Mojo de Caña Association. The project will be carried out with the students of CEIP Todoque and CEIP Los Campitos. Almost 80% of the children who will participate have lost their homes and 30% of their families, their main source of income.

According to the general director of Educo, Pilar Orenes, “when a catastrophe like this occurs, stress, anxiety, insecurity or fear increases for everyone, including children, who are more vulnerable to these situations. Traumatic events that they are experiencing affect their learning, their physical health and their mental health and can have negative consequences in their future. For this reason, we must work with them to manage the emotions they are experiencing “.

Since 2011, Educo has collaborated with the Mojo de Caña Association, an entity that promotes activities and social projects to improve the lives of people in vulnerable situations. The objective of the new Educo and Mojo de Caña project is to mitigate the psychological and social consequences of the children who have experienced the eruption of the volcano on the island of La Palma. Through Art Therapy, they will be able to work on stress and anxiety, emotionally process what has happened, recognize their feelings and express them through artistic creation.

“As adults we have more resources and experiences to face crisis situations, but childhood needs protection so that it does not affect their personal development, as we have been doing for years on the island of La Palma thanks to the support of entities such as Educo “, explains Elena Gil Arroyo, president of the Mojo de Caña Association.

Educo is an NGO that works in Spain and in 13 other countries around the world in favor of children and to guarantee their rights. The organization has responded to emergency situations, such as the one that occurred in Nicaragua due to the passage of hurricanes Eta and Iota, the fires in the Cox’s Bazar refugee camps in Bangladesh or the Mayon volcano eruption in the Philippines, among others.
