The Island Area of Municipal Cooperation and Housing of the Cabildo presented the program ‘Active Housing‘ at the Government Council this Wednesday. The program aims to provide financial support to Tenerife municipalities for the acquisition of houses or plots to expand the housing stock designated for social rental, making affordable rentals more accessible.

Vice president of Tenerife Council, Lope Afonso, has reiterated the institution’s commitment to “lead the search for solutions to the housing problem on our island.”

Afonso emphasized that “despite the Cabildo’s limited powers in this area, we are fully aware that housing is one of the most pressing issues for Tenerife residents, given the scarcity of supply, which has led to difficulties in accessing a home.”

Lope Afonso ensures that “the reality of Tenerife society guides us in establishing the priorities set by the island government,” highlighting “the work done by my colleague Sonia Hernández at the helm of the Cooperation area Municipal and Housing, culminating in a historic agreement with the ICAVI so that the Council can play a more active role in finding solutions to the current housing problem.”

This program aligns with the Canary Islands Housing Plan, sharing the objective of promoting the supply of rental homes, both through the construction of new homes and the purchase in the private market, aiming to expand the housing ownership in this regime, increasingly demanded by Canarian society.

In sum, it’s about “ensuring housing accessibility through social rental,” explains Lope Afonso, who further explains that “we have been coordinating with all the island’s municipalities to allow them to communicate their specific needs to the island area, so that we can effectively meet their demands.”
